Freqently asked questions

  • How can I determine if Play Therapy is the right choice for my child?
The first step in starting any therapy is a consultation with the therapist. During this session, the therapist will assist you in assessing whether play therapy is suitable for your child and your family. You can initiate contact for play therapy on your own or through a referral from another professional.
  • What should I tell my child about Play Therapy?
Use age-appropriate language. Highlight the positive aspects. Explain its purpose in helping them with difficulties and feelings. Assure confidentiality. Reassure them of your trust in the therapist. Encourage questions and open dialogue. Consider using books or resources. Normalise feelings. Offer your support throughout the process.
  • What is a registered and qualified Play Therapist?
A registered play therapist typically completes a Master's degree program in Child Play Therapy. This graduate-level qualification involves the completion of 250 hours of clinical training with clients, 70 hours of supervision conducted by a certified play therapist, and 50 hours of personal therapy. Additionally, registered play therapists are required to engage in continuous professional supervision to maintain their practice.
  • Should I discuss my children's therapy sessions with them?
You can inquire about how their session went, but it's important to avoid using labels. Instead of asking, "Was that fun?" which may not reflect their experience, inquire more openly. Labelling emotions after sessions can create misunderstandings and potentially make your child feel unheard, which could deter them from sharing in the future.
  • Who is the regulatory body for child Play Therapy in Australia?
Play therapists in Australia adhere to the professional guidelines established by PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) and APPTA (Australian Play Therapists Association). Nurture Play Therapy strictly follows the code of ethics outlined by these organisations in providing its services. View code of ethics below. PACFA APPTA
  • What are your fees?
Please use the contact form to enquire about fees.
  • How can I track my child's therapy progress?
During your child's therapy journey, the therapist will schedule parent consultations at regular intervals, typically every 4-6 weeks or after every 5 sessions. These meetings will focus on discussing your child's progress, play themes, and effective support strategies. It's crucial to conduct these catch-up sessions without the child present. This approach ensures that the child doesn't feel overlooked or undervalued by avoiding discussions about them and their sessions in their presence.
